Catching up with Cheryl Carmi of the UVM Foundation prompted me to reflect on where my book Phantom Border came from and how I look at the world. Not surprisingly, it has to do with humans and nature, or nature and culture, or ecology and society – whatever you want to call that whole glorious, vast, mysterious web of meaning and connections in which our lives unfold. We also got a little more concrete, like how the child that couldn’t tell one bird or tree from another came to plunge herself into a graduate program that is all about understanding the components and stories of a landscape.

That’s so great that our shared Alma Mater featured you. I enjoyed your book very much. It was great to be a fly on the wall between the Orion Writers Workshop and the email threads of our group and then see it between covers!! Congrats.
